OUR STORY

Set in the fertile Karkloof Valley of KwaZulu-Natal, Spurwing Horse Feeds was founded on over five decades of the Benson family’s experience in livestock management and a lifelong dedication to horses. Their involvement in breeding, training, and competing with racehorses, polo ponies, and warmbloods laid the foundation for a deep understanding of equine nutrition and performance.

Spurwing Horse Feeds was officially established in 1993, following consistent recognition for the outstanding condition and overall well-being of the family’s own horses — a direct result of the fibre-forward, quality-driven feeding philosophy they had refined over many years. What began as a solution for their own stables soon evolved into a brand trusted by riders, trainers, and breeders across the country.

Today, Spurwing operates from a dedicated, horse-only feed mill to ensure absolute product integrity, safety, and quality. Every raw material is carefully selected, and every ration is formulated with intention.

As the brand has grown, Spurwing has expanded its reach through a network of approved and strategically selected distributors across South Africa. These partnerships allow Spurwing to maintain personal relationships with customers while ensuring consistent access to premium nutrition, no matter the location.

OUR MILL

At Spurwing Horse Feeds, every bag begins its journey in our purpose-built equine feed mill — designed exclusively for the production of horse feed. Unlike many other manufacturers, we do not mix or manufacture feed for any other animals.

This single-species focus allows us to maintain absolute control over ingredient quality, consistency, and biosecurity. Our facility is meticulously managed to prevent any risk of cross-contamination and to ensure that every batch meets the precise nutritional and safety standards horses require. From sourcing premium raw materials to precision blending and packaging, our commitment is simple: horses first, always.

OUR FARMS

From Our Fields to Your Feed Room.

Nestled in the fertile Karkloof Valley, the Benson family farms have long been the heart of Spurwing Horse Feeds. These farms have been instrumental in merging the family’s passion for horses with their deep agricultural roots, creating the foundation on which our feeds are built.

We proudly grow all of the hays used in our rations on our own farms, giving us complete control over every step of the process — from preparing the lands and nurturing each crop, to harvesting at the peak of nutritional value and storing the bales under ideal conditions in our own sheds.

This hands-on approach ensures that the quality and consistency of every bale — and every bag of Spurwing feed — is carefully preserved from field to feed room.
